The Basehor Historical Museum Society was chartered in 1984 by a group of approximately 20 members. But even prior to 1984, a group of residents with an interest in area history began to collect and disseminate information and artifacts. In the early days, those artifacts were displayed in area businesses. In 1996, a vision for a museum and conference center was born, and in December 1998, Ray and Ann Breuer donated a parcel of land at 158th St. and Parallel for this purpose. The next few years saw the Society working diligently to raise funds to make the museum a reality, but grant approvals and fundraising was unsuccessful in raising the money needed. In March of 2007, Lela Wiley donated a building at 2812 No. 155th St. for a museum. With generous financial donations, supplies, and the help of numerous volunteers, the building was renovated to accommodate the exhibits our patrons enjoy today. The museum opened on October 4, 2008.

The mission of the Basehor Historical Museum Society is to promote awareness of the history of the Basehor Community and Leavenworth County. The Society collects, preserves and displays artifacts, disseminates historical information and produces educational programs.

Since its inception, in addition to the exhibits, the Society has held and sponsored numerous events and programs to include Christmas Homes Tours, Ladies Teas, hosted the 3rd Graders each year to visit and study the museum, conducted the Farmers’ and Holiday Markets, hosted a Christmas Open House each year with Santa Claus, along with the Festival of Trees. Various demonstrations include soap making, the history of different teas, buttons, hats, a presentation of the Harvey Girls, the railroad, and a spinning demonstration. We host the younger children with a May Day Craft and an Etiquette Class. We conduct research for families and others seeking information. A major accomplishment of the Society was in the fundraising and moving of the Basehor Reuben Library to the Basehor City Park.

Artifacts of local history are always welcome. There are many volunteer opportunities available. Monthly meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at the museum. Please join us at the museum as we endeavor to fulfill our mission.
